Waraji are Japanese sandals with strings made from rope and used for long everyday wearing.

For centuries people in Japan wore these shoes in on-foot journeys, pilgrimages and military campaigns. Waraji are a traditional attribute for Japanese soldiers as well as for ninja spies and monks.

*Classically waraji are worn in a way that the heel is almost covered with the sole, while the toes are partly outside (though in cosplays a more contemporary variant is often used, when the sole protects fully the toes).
